Celebrating the Life of John Donohue: Friend of McGaw YMCA and Camp Echo

We are deeply saddened by the passing of John Donohue, a cherished member of the McGaw YMCA and Camp Echo community whose impact will be felt for generations. John’s connection to the McGaw Y and Camp Echo spanned more than five decades. His involvement began with his family’s first Family Camp experience in 1970 and grew into a lifetime of dedicated service and support. Over the years, John volunteered at camp work weekends, served as a counselor and Family Camp sailing instructor, and supported youth campers as part of the Camp Echo Spirit Squad. He championed the mission of the Y as a board member and through committee work. Most recently, he led efforts to secure a $100,000 investment in the Camp Echo Sailing Program. YMCA Day of Giving Celebrates 140 Years of Community Support

  McGaw YMCA President/CEO Monique Parsons celebrates a successful Day of Giving. EVANSTON, IL – McGaw YMCA celebrated the spirit of generosity and community connection on May 7 during its 2026 YMCA Day of Giving, held as part of the organization’s 140th Anniversary celebration. In just 24 hours, more than 100 donors came together to support McGaw YMCA’s life-changing programs and services. Thanks to a generous matching gift, every contribution was doubled, unlocking the full $15,000 match and raising more than $34,000. Colorful pinwheels were planted in the Garden of Gratitude on the McGaw Y front lawn to recognize each act of generosity. The vibrant display symbolized the collective impact of every donation and the brighter futures being created across Evanston through YMCA programs, including high-quality child care and early education, swim lessons, summer camps, health and wellness programs, social activities for seniors, and safe, affordable housing for men. How MetaMedia middle school program at the YMCA provides mentorship, builds memories
