EVANSTON, IL. — When school is out, access to healthy meals can be limited. The McGaw YMCA is helping close that gap by offering free, nutritious meals to all kids and teens 18 and under this summer, no registration required. Now in its fifteenth year, the YMCA’s Summer Food Program continues to support Evanston families by making sure young people stay fueled, active, and ready to thrive all summer long. In 2025, the McGaw YMCA served more than 110,000 healthy meals and snacks to local youth and families through its programs, building on a long-standing commitment to food access and community wellness. We are deeply saddened by the passing of John Donohue, a cherished member of the McGaw YMCA and Camp Echo community whose impact will be felt for generations. John’s connection to the McGaw Y and Camp Echo spanned more than five decades. His involvement began with his family’s first Family Camp experience in 1970 and grew into a lifetime of dedicated service and support. Over the years, John volunteered at camp work weekends, served as a counselor and Family Camp sailing instructor, and supported youth campers as part of the Camp Echo Spirit Squad. He championed the mission of the Y as a board member and through committee work. Most recently, he led efforts to secure a $100,000 investment in the Camp Echo Sailing Program.
