At the McGaw Y, our work to strengthen our community focuses on three main areas:
Youth Development
Nurturing the potential of every child and teen
We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why we work to cultivate the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.
AIM: Maximize the overall potential of every youth as a caring, proactive and responsible leader for their family and community.
OUR COMMITMENT: Offer holistic youth development programming, experiences and support.
METHODOLOGY: Social-emotional, cognitive, physical and character formation.
OUTCOME: A more educated, caring, and responsible citizenry.
Healthy Living
Improving the community’s health and well-being
In Evanston and our surrounding communities, the Y is a leading voice on health and well-being. With a mission centered on balance, the Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirits, minds and bodies.
AIM: Improve health outcomes and lifestyles in Evanston.
OUR COMMITMENT: Provide affordable learning experiences and greater access throughout the community.
METHODOLOGY: Coaching, training and facilitation via behavior modification, wellness, nutrition and healthy choices.
OUTCOME: A healthier workforce; a decrease in obesity and chronic illnesses; and a more active Evanston.
Social Responsibility
Giving back and providing support to our neighbors
The McGaw YMCA has been listening and responding to our community’s most critical social needs for 130 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations, bringing youth volunteers together to serve the community, or promoting programs that bring or prevent chronic disease, the McGaw Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.
AIM: Build a stronger community via public policy, collective action and designated program initiatives.
OUR COMMITMENT: Foster social connectedness, strengthen support networks, and encourage investment in our community.
METHODOLOGY: Collective action, visionary leadership, advocacy and public policy specific to our core programs and services.
OUTCOME: A vibrant community committed to the next generation.
