Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, there are about 100 days of summer that are ready to be filled up with seasonal activities, time with friends and family, and outdoor pursuits. After a long winter, and an even longer spring, Evanston is ready to get out and enjoy the season!
The McGaw YMCA has always been a place where everyone can find something that appeals to them, especially during the summer months when school is out, schedules are more flexible, and the days are longer. No matter the age, interest or experience level, McGaw has summer covered.
Seasonal Programs for Youth
A longtime leader in supporting youth development, the McGaw Y’s summer offerings expand beyond its main building at 1000 Grove Street to serve even more of Evanston. This year, day camps and youth programs will also be available at the Children’s Center, Family Focus Center and three District 65 elementary schools, and Camp Echo will continue to serve youth in Fremont, Michigan. Summer is a time when kids truly benefit from a break in routine by trying new outdoor experiences, building new relationships, and exploring new ways to stay active. In keeping with its mission, fee assistance and scholarships are available for all McGaw Y programming, so it remains accessible to all families.
The McGaw Y Children’s Center provides full- and part-time preschool programs that prepare toddlers for school success. Located at 1420 Maple Avenue, all children participate in activities such as swimming lessons, gym, music, the arts and more. Preparing the earliest learners for Kindergarten is the objective, so McGaw also hosts a Head Start program in Evanston’s fifth ward, where qualifying participants can get access to high-quality early childhood education.
For children entering Kindergarten through fifth grade, McGaw Y day camps promote a healthier lifestyle, instill self-confidence, and inspire leadership through unique experiences and experiential learning. Day camps are offered at the Children’s Center and at Dewey Elementary School, 1551 Wesley Avenue. For school age kids in need of academic support over the long break, McGaw hosts its free Summer Learning program at Family Focus Center, 2010 Dewey Avenue. Participating students are selected by their school and District 65 based on their specific academic needs.
McGaw’s overnight experience at Camp Echo is a popular option for children entering third grade through high school. An inclusive, welcoming place, Camp Echo instills a connection to community, to nature and the environment while campers build independence, discover new activities, and make meaningful friendships.
MetaMedia, a space for middle school youth, is a free digital media and maker education place and program designed to increase access to technology. Skilled mentors guide and encourage the exploration of passions and projects, empowering youth in a safe community atmosphere. MetaMedia specialty camps and free open studio hours are happening all summer long.
Aquatics and Sports for All Ages
Living in Evanston on Lake Michigan, water safety is an important life skill for youth and adults alike. The McGaw Y’s renown Aquatics instructors are ready to help everyone feel confident in the water, whether they are new to swimming, or just want to improve their strokes for overall health benefits. Swimming lessons are offered throughout the summer, for every age and any skill level. Regardless of what the weather brings, two heated indoor pools are always accessible.
In addition to swimming, McGaw’s youth and adult sports programs, including soccer, basketball, volleyball and martial arts, run June 24 – August 4. Everyone can brush up on athletic technique and get an edge up on fall league action, all while having fun with other players from around Evanston.
Extra Wellness Motivation
The McGaw Y Wellness Center is always open and available for members to get the most out of their workouts. Summer is a great time to try something new, like a group fitness class or a session with a personal trainer. During the 100 days of summer, non-members can take advantage of a $0 Joiner’s Fee on any Monday until August 26.
No Evanston summer would be complete without the highly anticipated 4th of July parade. It’s a great opportunity for community members to come out in support of McGaw, as each year members and staff alike join together to walk the route in celebration of the holiday, the McGaw mission, and summer wellness in mind, body and spirit.
