Staff and volunteers at Camp Echo are required to have varying degrees of certification, based on the responsibilities and tasks that their job entails.
All staff and volunteers at Camp Echo are expected to have CPR and First Aid certifications.
Although Lifeguard certification is not required to work at Camp Echo, it is strongly encouraged and is required for anyone working as Teen or Trip Staff. The Camp Echo salary scale offers a $36/week incentive for Lifeguards, which roughly pays you back in one full summer. This is built into the positions for which it is required and is a boost for other positions when relevant to the role.
International staff members interested in lifeguard certification should look for the British program “National Pool Lifeguard Qualification”. Once at camp, you will work with our other lifeguards to form cohesive rescue responses. RLSS UK is a great site to find a course near you.
If you have any specific questions about Lifeguarding or CPR/First Aid, please contact our Program Coordinator Anna Vogel.
Wilderness First Aid
Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification is required for Wilderness Teen Staff. The Camp Echo salary scale offers a $18/week incentive for WFAs.
The WFA certification is a 2-day intensive course, often over a weekend, focused on wilderness first aid skills and is a great introduction into wilderness medicine.
If you have any other specific questions about obtaining your WFA, please contact the Adventure Trips Coordinator Charlie Schaefer.
Wilderness First Responder
Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification is required for Adventure Trip Guides and Trip Unit Leaders. The Camp Echo salary scale offers a $60/week incentive for Guides who are WFRs. There will be no WFR bonus offered to the Unit Leaders as it is part of the base pay.
Camp Echo typically hosts a WFR course in the spring. There are limited spots available in this WFR training. Priority is given to Adventure Trip Guides who are committed to working all-summer, followed by Adventure Trip Guides working partial summers, and finally non-Adventure Trip Guides. Spots will be confirmed by the Camp Echo Adventure Trip Coordinator. Note that staff who receive the WFR training at Camp Echo are not eligible for the WFR salary boost of $60/week during the summer that they receive the training – as a 2-year training, they would be eligible the following year.
The WFR dates for 2020 are May 16th-20th
Up to four staff may recertify their WFRs during the first three days of course if full course participation isn’t maxed out. These opportunities would be given to full summer staff on first-come, first-serve basis. Returning staff that recert at camp will receive a partial WFR bonus of $30/week.
Sign up for this course will start in the spring. If you have any questions about the WFR course please contact the Adventure Trips Coordinator Charlie Schaefer.
