MCGAW YMCA ANNOUNCES BOARD SLATE OF NOMINEES & ANNUAL MEETING

Each year, the McGaw YMCA Board of Directors nominates a new cohort of individuals to serve on the Board and the Membership of the McGaw YMCA votes to elect new and returning board members during the virtual Board Election. The proposed slate is listed below.

In addition, as part of the FY23 Board election, the Membership will also vote on changes to the By-Laws of the Association as submitted by the Board of Directors. The updated bylaws can be viewed here. 

The FY23 virtual Board Election will be held August 1-8. Current McGaw Y members will receive an email at 8:00 a.m. (CDT) on Monday, August 1, with a link to the virtual ballot to cast their vote. The polls will remain open until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, August 8.

The election results will be shared at our in-person Annual Meeting on Tuesday, August 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the McGaw YMCA Chinnock Lounge.

The following slate of new candidates is up for election during the FY23 Board Election (presented in alphabetical order). 


Michael Bergmann

Michael Bergmann has served as the Executive Director of the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) since 2010, where he provides the strategic oversight and direction for PILI’s work to engage, inspire and empower those advancing equal access to justice. Under his leadership over the last decade, PILI has significantly expanded its reach and impact by building on its nearly 45-year legacy and becoming a statewide organization. Michael has overseen the growth of PILI’s Law Student Internship Program, both in terms of the number of Interns funded and in the amount of the stipend provided to Interns. He has led PILI’s efforts in the development of innovative pro bono committees at the judicial circuit level across Illinois and the expansion of PILI’s work into providing direct services through a statewide network of pro bono volunteers. During his tenure, PILI has also seen a significant increase in the financial support PILI receives across all funding sources. Michael originally joined PILI in 2006, serving as Director of Programs before becoming the Executive Director.

Michael serves on the Dean’s Council for the DePaul University College of Law, where he has also taught as an Adjunct Professor. He also serves on the Advisory Board for the Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management at North Park University. Michael also serves on the Advisory Board of the Chicago Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society. During his tenure at PILI, Michael has also handled pro bono matters through Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing and the National Immigrant Justice Center.

An active member of the American Bar Association (ABA), Michael is currently serving in the ABA’s House of Delegates, and on the ABA Nominating Committee and the Standing Committee on Membership. He is also a member of the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) where he currently serves on the Board of Governors and as Chair of the Bench & Bar Section Council. He is also a member of the Chicago Bar Association.

Frequently recognized for his contributions to the bar and the public, Michael recently received the Russell K. Scott Equal Justice Award from Land of Lincoln Legal Aid and the Amicus Award from the Illinois Judges Association. He was previously named one of “40 Under 40 Illinois Attorneys to Watch” in 2013 by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company.

Michael attended The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Politics. He received his Juris Doctor from DePaul University College of Law. Prior to joining PILI, he served as the Guardian Ad Litem Program Director for Chicago Volunteer Legal Services. Before and during law school, Michael was a consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.

A resident of Evanston with his husband Robert and their dog Sadie, Michael is a member of the congregation of First United Methodist Church of Evanston where he serves as Membership Chair. He previously served as a Commissioner on the City of Evanston’s Human Relations Commission.


Nancy Owens

Nancy Owens is a recent retiree from YMCA of the USA (Y-USA). During her time with Y-USA, she provided leadership to manage its resources responsibly by overseeing financial plans, policies and relationships. Her portfolio also includes the YMCA Employee Benefits Plan, Y-USA’s facilities, and Strategic Sourcing. She served the strategic needs of the Movement by helping define and implement best practices for local YMCAs related to financial audits and IRS filing requirements. She was staff liaison to the Audit/Finance Committee and the Investment Committee and was the Assistant Treasurer of the Y-USA National Board of Directors. Nancy also represented Y-USA as a member of the board of directors of 501c Agencies Trust, an unemployment trust that offers YMCAs and other nonprofits an alternative to funding state unemployment taxes.

Nancy joined Y-USA in 2001 as the Senior Director of Finance and Controller. Before that, she was the Senior V.P. and Chief Financial Officer of PGI, Inc., where she was responsible for the finance, human resources and information technology departments. She also played an integral role in the preparation and filing of the company’s S-1 in anticipation of an initial public offering.

Prior to PGI, Nancy served as Director of Internal Audit at Borg-Warner Security Corporation, overseeing the audits of approximately 400 locations. She began her career as Staff Auditor with Touche Ross & Co. and was promoted to Senior Manager during her 10-year tenure. After the merger with Deloitte Haskins and Sells, she was selected to lead the implementation of the merged firm’s newly developed audit approach.

Nancy is a certified public accountant, holding both a master’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.


Corey Winchester

Corey Winchester is a locally, regionally, and nationally recognized educator with over a decade of K-20 expertise, mainly serving as a History/Social Science teacher and Staff Coordinator of Students Organized Against Racism (SOAR) at Evanston Township High School.

Over the years, he’s also served in various roles with Breakthrough Collaborative as a Campus Recruiter, Northwestern Academy for Chicago Public Schools as a Summer Instructor, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History as Hamilton Education Program Senior Education Fellow, and the Aspen Institute’s Aspen Young Leaders Fellowship (AYLF) as Advocate in Residence.

Corey has been recognized as a Distinguished Alumni by the School of Education at Loyola University Chicago, a Golden Apple Fellow for Excellence in Teaching in 2019 by the Golden Apple Foundation and selected as Illinois History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in 2020.

He has a BS in Education and Social Policy and a MA in Learning Sciences from Northwestern University where is also a PhD student in Learning Sciences. Additionally, he has a MEd in Cultural and Educational Policy Studies from Loyola University Chicago. For self-care, Corey enjoys spending time with his loving friends and family, exercising, being outdoors, and being a plant dad. Corey lives in Chicago with his partner Jonathan.
