New board members were announced at the 137th Annual Meeting on August 9.
EVANSTON, IL — The McGaw YMCA, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community, announced the election of three new members to serve three-year terms on its Board of Directors. The announcement was made at the 137th Annual Meeting held August 9.
The following community leaders have been elected to the board:
- Michael Bergmann, Executive Director of the Public Interest Law Initiative
- Nancy Owens, recently retired V.P./Chief Financial Officer at the YMCA of the USA
- Corey Winchester, a locally, regionally, and nationally recognized educator who mainly serves as a History/Social Science teacher and Staff Coordinator of Students Organized Against Racism (SOAR) at Evanston Township High School
The Annual Meeting was held in person at the McGaw YMCA for the first time since 2019. Those in attendance had an opportunity to celebrate the Y’s volunteer board members and hear from President & CEO Monique Parsons, who provided an update on the McGaw Y’s strategic plan and shared a vision for the year ahead.
“When families and individuals thrive, our community grows stronger – and never has the need for strong community been greater than right now,” said Parsons at the Annual Meeting.
Parsons expressed her gratitude to McGaw YMCA’s staff, members, community partners, volunteers, supporters, and neighbors for their commitment in helping to innovate and provide creative solutions that make it possible for the YMCA to adapt rapidly in response to the escalating needs in Evanston.
“Whether our neighbors are focused on finding high quality childcare, creating a new fitness routine, volunteering, or finding a place to live, the McGaw YMCA will be here, bringing together people from different backgrounds, perspectives and generations, ensuring that everyone has access to the opportunities, relationships and resources necessary to learn, grow and thrive,” explained Parsons.
Several board members were re-elected, including Mark Metz, Marquis Parker, Allie Payne and Lisa Yang to serve a three-year term, and Janine Hill and Casey Miller to serve a one-year term. The membership of the McGaw YMCA also voted to approve the recommended revisions to the organization’s bylaws. In addition, new board officers were announced to serve for a one-year term: Janine Hill, chair; Mark Metz, vice chair; Marjorie Rallins, secretary; and Vince Sweeney, treasurer.
The Board also thanked its retiring board members – Carey Bartell, Aracely Canchola, John Pratt and Sean Reynolds for their years of service and dedication.
Board Chair Janine Hill affirmed the Board’s excitement about McGaw YMCA’s future and encouraged Annual Meeting attendees to consider themselves as ‘ambassadors’ of the Y.
“With your help as ambassadors of this Y, we can encourage more people to get involved with the Y so they can discover their own sense of purpose. We help our community develop new skills, connect with neighbors, pursue health goals, and give back in support of their fellow community members,” Hill said.
The McGaw YMCA offers countless ways for people to get involved and find their ‘why’ throughout the year. Whether you join as a member, participate in a program, volunteer, donate, or a combination of these activities, the Y helps people discover a renewed sense of positivity, passion, purpose and belonging with countless opportunities to make a real impact on themselves and their community.
