We’re excited to share that the installation of interior signage and wayfinding graphics will begin shortly. This is a key milestone in our Signage & Wayfinding project, aimed at improving navigation within and around the 1000 Grove Street building.
Here’s what you can expect during this phase:
- Wall and door surfaces in key areas will be prepped and painted, followed by the installation of the first set of large-format wayfinding graphics. Please note that not all areas on every floor will receive new graphics during this initial installation, but work will continue until all member-serving spaces are completed.
- Temporary signs will be placed in certain locations as we test messaging.
- We’ve adopted consistent names for amenities, entrances, and parking lots. This common language will improve accessibility, simplify directions, and support more flexible use of spaces. View the list.
- We’ll provide updated maps to showcase our enhanced color-coding system and streamlined terminology for identifying entrances, elevators, stairs, and parking lots. View the new parking map (New floor maps coming soon!)
- Once large-format graphics are in place, permanent ADA-compliant room ID signs will be installed throughout the building, except on the Men’s Residence floors and Level 2 in that wing due to the anticipated renovation of the residence.
Emerson Street Walkway
As part of this phase, we will name the main walkway that leads from the lobby to member amenities as the “Emerson Street Walkway.” This name pays tribute to the historic Emerson Street Branch YMCA, a beloved hub of social and civic life for Black Evanstonians for over 60 years until its closure in 1969. By naming this central thoroughfare, our Y aims to create a clear path that connects members to a significant part of the organization’s heritage and the YMCA’s history in Evanston.
SAVE THE DATE: Join us in celebrating the naming of the Emerson Street Walkway as part of McGaw Y’s 139th Birthday festivities at 11:30am on Friday, November 15. More details will be shared soon!
