EVANSTON, IL — After more than two months on the road, McGaw YMCA Board Chair Mark Metz and his wife Noreen Edwards have successfully completed their 4,100-mile bike ride along the TransAmerica Trail to raise awareness and support for the McGaw YMCA Men’s Residence. They reached the Eastern shore on November 23, and are making their way home to Evanston.

“It is deeply satisfying to have completed the long and physically challenging TransAmerica Trail, especially because of our mission to raise funds and awareness for the McGaw Y's capital campaign to renovate the men’s residence,” said Metz.

“As we drive toward home today, my thoughts are scrolling through all the places we have been and the wonderful people we’ve met along the way,” he added, sharing that he will need time to reflect before fully grasping the enormity of the experience.

Beginning on August 24, the self-supported ride took the couple coast-to-coast, facing more than 4,100 miles of challenging terrain. Along the way, they documented their journey nearly every day on a blog and Instagram, sharing stories of the Men’s Residence with people they met and encouraging donations. With contributions still coming in, they expect to raise over $20,000 for the renovation campaign.

“Mark and Noreen’s dedication is truly inspiring,” said Monique Parsons, President/CEO of McGaw YMCA. “I followed their journey every day on Instagram and was deeply moved by their experience. They did it! Not only have they raised crucial funds, but they’ve also brought national attention to the Men’s Residence and the importance of safe, affordable housing. Their journey is a powerful reminder that when people move with purpose, every mile can make a difference.”

Through this extraordinary journey, Mark and Noreen inspired countless supporters and brought national attention to the legacy of the Men’s Residence, one of the nation’s last remaining Single Room Occupancy (SRO) YMCA facilities. The funds and awareness generated from the ride will directly contribute to the Residence’s renovation and ongoing programs for residents.
