Take Your Fitness to the Next Level
McGaw Y members ages 14+ receive a series of 3 FREE SMART Start coaching sessions with a nationally certified YMCA personal trainer. Together, you'll develop SMART Goals, complete fitness assessments, discuss which SMART Start routine is right for you, and talk about all the ways you can benefit from the fitness facilities and classes included with your Y membership. Each coaching session includes a 30-minute workout to help you feel successful using our facilities.
Whether you're just getting started as a McGaw Y member or want to learn more about all the Y has to offer, SMART Start will give you the inspiration and attention you need to make the most of your Y membership!
What to Expect During SMART Start Coaching
What is it? SMART Start helps you get into the habit of working out through three 45-minute one-to-one coaching sessions, scheduled two weeks apart within your first six weeks at the Y. In these sessions, a McGaw Y trainer will collaborate with you to discuss your SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals and identify the support you need to take your fitness to the next level.
What it is not? SMART Start is not a one-size-fits-all program, nor is designed to push personal training packages. These coaching sessions are focused on your well-being, ensuring that you create a fitness plan tailored to your specific needs, goals, and comfort level for a successful fitness journey at the Y.
Who does it serve? Everyone! Whether you're a beginner, returning after a fitness hiatus, or a regular exerciser, SMART Start is designed to encourage and support your efforts, helping you stay motivated and committed.
Why now? Studies show that 87% of members who complete an onboarding program like SMART Start remain active toward their goals 9 months later. Research also shows that 43% of people who set goals alone abandon their goals within 30 days.
How do I get started? To get started, choose the SMART Start routine that is right for you and then request your first coaching session!
What should I expect in each session?
Session 1: Targeted assessment, discussion of SMART Start routine, setting a goal for the next two weeks, and a focused workout tailored to achieve that goal.
Session 2: Check-in and evaluation of goals, additional resources, and progression in the workout routine.
Session 3: Final assessment, concluding workout, and discussion of next steps.

Recommended for those looking to improve speed, strength, endurance, technique, complete a challenge (such as a triathlon or a military fitness test) or any personalized goal determined in collaboration with your trainer, aligning with your interests and abilities.

Develop habits that will lead to healthier nutrition and improved levels of physical activity. Recommended for those with varying weight loss goals who are seeking long-term, sustainable lifestyle changes.
Functional Strength and Mobility
Enhance overall daily function and health by improving strength and mobility. Recommended for individuals with various strength goals, those in recovery from injury, and/or those seeking to improve balance.
Active Older Adult
Engage in safe, modified, and progressive exercises to enhance your strength, mobility, and vitality. Recommended for individuals with initial limitations, aiming to achieve activities of daily living with greater ease.
