Living in our lakefront community, swimming and water safety skills are a vital part of our mission. We offer a wide selection of infant and parent/child swim lessons to school-age and adult swim lessons. Our swim program teaches participants of all ages and abilities to become confident swimmers as they develop strong techniques, learn water safety, and enjoy swimming as a form of exercise. Private lessons are also available.

Swim Lessons - Parent and Child

Parent / Child Swim A (6 months-2.5 yrs)

Parents/guardians accompany children in this stage, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment. Swimmers learn about water through exploration and are encouraged to enjoy themselves. 30-minute lessons. For children at least 6 months old but less than 2.5 years old and their parent/guardian.

Parent / Child Swim B – Sunfish (2.5 – 3 yrs)

Designed for infants and toddlers who are able to enter and exit the water with help and to enjoy the water with a parent or guardian. In stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills. Swimmers have fun and build confidence while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision. 30-minute lesson. For children ages 2.5-3 years old and their parent/guardian.

Swim Lessons - Preschool

Preschool Swim 1- Pike (3–5 yrs)

For preschool age children who have never had swim lessons without a parent or guardian, or are afraid of the water. Swimmers develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student's future progress in swimming. 30-minute lesson.

Preschool Swim 2- Eel (3–5 yrs)

For preschool age children who are comfortable in the water and able to swim and float assisted for 5 feet. In stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Students should be comfortable with blowing bubbles and basic swim skills with limited instructor support. 30-Minute Lesson.

Preschool Swim 3- Ray (3–5 yrs)

For preschool age children who can swim 10 yards unassisted with their face in the water and without a flotation device. In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg actions. Students begin to build endurance with no instructor support. 30-Minute Lesson.

Preschool Swim 4- Starfish (3–5 yrs)

For preschool age children who can swim 15 yards unassisted with their face in the water and without a flotation device. Having mastered the fundamentals, students in this stage continue to develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn breaststroke basics. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke. 30-Minute Lesson.

Swim Lessons - School Age

Swim 1 - Beginner Polliwog (6–13 yrs)

For school age children who have never had swim lessons without a parent or guardian or are afraid of the water. Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit the water unassisted. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student's future progress in swimming. 30-minute lesson.

Swim 2 - Advanced Polliwog (6–13 yrs)

For school age children who are comfortable in the water and able to swim and float assisted for 5 feet. In stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Students should be comfortable with blowing bubbles and basic swim skills with limited instructor support. 30-minute lesson.

Swim 3 - Guppy (6-13 yrs)

For school age children who can swim 10 yards unassisted with their face in the water and without a flotation device. In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg actions. Students begin to build endurance with no instructor support. 30-minute lesson.

Swim 4 - Minnow (6–13 yrs)

For school age children who can swim 10 yards unassisted with their face in the water and without a flotation device. Swim 5 - Fish (6-13 yrs)

For school age children who can swim 50 yards with confidence and show endurance in the water with any stroke or combination of strokes. Students in stage 5 work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.

Swim 6 - Flying Fish (6-13 yrs)

For school age children who can swim 50 yards with confidence and show endurance in the water with any stroke or combination of strokes. Students in stage 5 work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.

Swim Lessons - Teen & Adult

Swim Lessons - (14 yrs+)

For individuals ages 14+ who have never had swim lessons or are uncomfortable around water. Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn the basic skills needed to be safe in and around water, such as floating, arm and leg action, water movement, and breath control. In this stage the student will progress to swimming longer distances up to 15 feet unassisted without a flotation device. 30-minute lesson.

Swim Lessons - Private

Private & Semi-Private Lessons (Ages 3+)

The Y's private and semi-private swim lessons provide a more personalized learning experience to increase your skills and meet your goals. Enjoy individual attention with a certified YMCA swim instructor or sign up for semi-private lessons with a partner to benefit from additional savings. We offer multiple package options and flexible scheduling.
